Gutter Cleaning Tools

When it is time to clean your gutters there are lots of options out there. Here are three I’ve used, which is my favorite and why.

First up we have a simple “Gutter Getter Scoop” ($3.98) from Home Depot. This tool works fine. I’t the cheapest option of the three and it’s also my least favorite. The biggest issue I have is that gutters are not all installed at the same distance from the roof. Sometimes, particularly on shop roofs, I’ve had situations where I could not physically fit the tool into the gutter, much less scoop anything out. I find this tool most useful on lightly soiled single story houses when I want to scoop everything by hand.

Next up is the Xero Gutter Gizmo ($13.95). I was the most excited for this tool because it easily attaches to extension poles and it has two sides: a scoop, and an extension that helps push or pull debris around the gutter hangers. What I’ve found is that the tool causes so much flex on the end of the pole that it isn’t as useful for very full gutters. The spoon works great, but then you have the cumbersome top part getting in the way.

Last we have a gutter spoon (2pk $25.99). This is the tool I end up using the most. It’s strong and durable and I’m able to use it while standing on the roof to move debris to a single area for removal, from a ladder with an extension pole to pull material close to me for removal, or on its own as a scoop to fill up my bucket. If you’re going to clean your own gutters this fall and want a recommendation, that would be mine. Get a 2 pack of gutter spoons, add an extension pole and a bucket and get to work!
